Holidaying in Marmaris, Turkey – A Travel Guide to the Town By Maria Tillinghous
Marmaris, the most “European” of the resort towns on Turkey’s coastline, is a fairly large resort area, and, in the summertime, an active, sophisticated centre of tourism. When you come across the north eastern Mediterranean shore, it is actually the first town along the well-known "Turquoise Coast". Marmaris, which was built around a large bay at the base of mountains thick with trees, has a modern marina which acts as a base for sailing the Mediterranean, by catering to both private yachts and commercial cruise lines. Local storytellers claim that Marmaris got its name when Suleyman the Magnificent, upon discovering that he did not like the finished results of the stronghold he had ordered built, exclaimed, “Mimari as!which translates roughly to “Hang the architect
Marmaris shopping can be a pleasant experience. Extraordinary bargains can be had on items as varied as jewelry, ceramics, leather and carpets with many of the better deals being found at the Carsi Market which is found in the Ottoman Castle. It has over 200 different shops and a flea market which is open every day, including a special Thursday market where local people come to market their fruits and vegetables also with fabrics and clothing. Ready yourself for the Marmaris venture. Many vendors, especially the ones in the bazaars, are known to tout customers which, while illegal, can be a real irritant. As a rule, it is expected that shoppers bargain with them over prices, except in the larger shops. Negotiating can bring the already cheap price of a desired item down as much as 30 percent. Marmaris is known to deal in knock-off merchandise. So if you find a great price on a Rolex watch that you’d like to have, you should expect that it is a fake. Fakes in Turkey are good quality, which means you should consider buying it there. Whether you're craving something international, or you're dying to try some of the local food at the Turkish Restaurant Lokanta, Marmaris has hundreds of different places for you to eat, no matter what your craving or your budget. If your fickle family can never agree what they are in the mood for Don' will solve the problem with an all inclusive international menu.t forget to try samples along the way as well, Turkish delights, doner kebabs, and seafood meze dishes are all well worth your interest.
The savage and non-indigenous evenings in Marmaris often encircle Bar Street by the waterfront. Here you can find all the nightclubs and bars, overflowing with people until as late as 4am. Most of the restaurants in the area will stay open all night to feed the hunger of the early morning partiers. Some of the clubs near the beach are Cheers, that will entertain you with their drag show, Vagabundo, where the staff gets wild dancing on the bar, and Davy Jones Locker, an affordable place to dance and drink.
