Cancer is one of the top ten awful diseases.

By Francisco Segura

Cancer is one of the top ten awful diseases.

Probably one of the most unusual roles for Sean Connery was his portrayal of a scientist looking into a way to eradicate cancer; cancer has killed untold millions, but each year the cure for this disease gets another step closer. When you think about the impact that a cure would bring to this global problem it sends a shudder through your spine. The problem is we don't fully understand the causes of cancer although there are many things in our life that can trigger it. Even now many people do not really understand what cancer is despite growing up with it all around them. Could it be true that we are all born with it? This is a disease where unhealthy cells grow, divide and then expand into other cells, often transferring to parts of the body using a method called metastasis. The malignant property of cancer differentiates it from benign tumors which limit their growth and do not invade or metastasize; some benign tumors, however, are capable of becoming malignant. Fortunately, this is a disease which is not as prevalent in the young but as you age the risk of cancer increases; cancer is responsible for about 13 percent of all deaths worldwide. Whilst smoking, chemicals and radiation for instance, can be the cancer trigger, it is the poison from these or other sources that transform body cells and cause genetic abnormalities which grow and multiply. For some people the problem lies not with any form of external poison although faults with their parents DNA or genetic makeup can result in a person being born with the diseased cells. It is still not fully understood why one person will contract the disease and another be free from it but it is believed that the interactions between any carcinogens and each person's particular DNA is complicated.Cancer is one of the top ten diseases that are researched regularly throughout the world and the truth is we have learned a great deal from studies performed around the globe. Much of the world's research into diseases is to try and find the reason why some people do not contract certain diseases whilst others do. By understanding the origins of cancer, perhaps we will be able to avoid contracting it until we come up with a cure. One of the major causes surrounds food and dietary habits; your regular diet could be putting you at long term risk from all kinds of diseases. People are generally eating too much of the wrong things such as an excess salt intake, too much saturated fat and certain dairy produce; studies have shown that there is a connection between dairy produced calcium and prostrate cancer.Cancer does not have any prejudice when it comes to invading a person's body as it can strike anywhere. The problem is that it can also be insidious and a person may have it for some time before it is diagnosed. Cures for many types have advanced in recent years and are more likely to be successful if the cancer is found in its early stages. For those people diagnosed with cancer, my heart goes out to them and their families; however, the constant research is paying off and the life expectancy of cancer victims is increasing all the time.
