Causes And Treatment Of Sexual Impotence

Sexual Impotence refers to the hindered capacity of a male to reach or maintain a penis erection for adequate time to engage in sexual intercourse. It is more commonly known as erectile dysfunction (ED). Its occurrence in a population is quite variable within different age groups. Its incidence increases with age and is quite common in geriatrics.

It occurs in 7-8% of American males of the age group 20-39 years and shoots up to 55-60% for males over the age of 70 years. 10 Million males in the U.S alone are estimated to be suffering from some form of sexual impotence.

Causes: In the past, psychic causes have been exclusively held responsible for the failure to perform. But recent studies have established that 80-90% of all impotence cases have organic causes such as hormonal imbalance, diabetes, chronic health issues and peripheral vascular diseases. These physiological factors when combined with psychological factors can have a decimating affect on a person's sexual health

The causes are not just limited to physiological and psychological factors but also dependent on one's lifestyle. Consumption of excessive alcohol leads to Brewer's droop, which reduces one's ability to get and maintain an erection. In the long run, it diminishes sexual libido affecting both sexual drive and desire as it affects the adequate production of the male sexual hormone testosterone.

The side effects of certain medicines such as the ones used for hypertension and anti-depressants also impart sexual impotence. They also cause a debilitating effect on libido, ejaculation and orgasm. Other causes that are associated with erectile dysfunction are smoking, physical inactiveness and poor cardiovascular fitness.

Diagnosis: Performance anxiety is the main cause leading young men to check out with their general practitioner if they achieve a normal sustained erection. Occasional episodes of failure to reach erection are common and does not indicate persistent erectile problems in the future and do not require a visit to your GP.

When erection issues start to occur at frequent intervals, it is best advisable to visit your doctor. It might feel embarrassing to discuss such an issue with your doctor or a practice nurse. But, they have many patients with sexual issues and are adept at handling them and you should refrain from hiding important details.

The doctor will first inquire about your general health and erections including morning erections and their intensity in the past and present. Your blood pressure and pulse will be checked which is an indication of your circulatory mechanism. The Doctor will examine your penis and scrotum and may solicit further tests to determine the causing factor such as anemia, diabetes or hormonal imbalances.

The doctor may talk to both the partners to check whether psychological problems are the root cause of the issue. If the need arises, you doctor will refer you to other clinics for specialized tests.

Treatment: Impotence is often curable and 95% of impotence patients find an effective treatment such as talking therapy, behavioral therapy and drugs. Counselors and psycho sexual therapies often treat anxiety and relationship difficulties successfully.

Drugs will only be indicated when the cause of ED is other than psychological factors. The patient will be asked to undertake a course of drugs in cases such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis. The most commonly employed drug is sildenafil (Viagra). Other similar drugs are tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).
