Laying the Foundation of a Great Business Card

By Robert Johnston

Laying the Foundation of a Great Business Card

I’ve noticed a trend that seems to exist among business cards. Quite often people do everything they can to make themselves stand out among all the other companies out there, and the business card is seen as a good tool for accomplishing this.

I’m not saying this isn’t true, because a great business card can certainly do this. The problem lies with people who make their full color business cards, pick out great designs, a flashy look, but then forget some of the most basic contact information.

Sometimes what they forget can be as little as a link to their website, and sometimes it can be as big as forgetting their phone number. They’re so focused on making those full color business cards they don’t realize that the business card has functions beyond just looking good.

That’s why I’m going to go over some of the basics needs that any print business card is going to have. This may seem obvious to some, but you might still want to make sure you have a checklist for the next time you decide to do some online business card printing.

The first thing you need to do is to decide exactly how much information you plan on having on your business card. You could easily put your company name, your name, your phone number, cell phone number, fax number, email address, company logo, company slogan, mailing address, and so on.

Some of this information is fine, but do you really need all of it? Are you planning to put more of an emphasis on your website than anything else? Is your company logo a strong part of your image, or is your company slogan a little more important to you? Do you work online enough that you don’t need a physical address anymore?

These are all particularly important question you need to answer before you focus on the design of the card at all. Make sure that when you print business cards you’re putting on the right kind of information. Don’t waste room on a mailing address if no one is going to need it.

Once you know what information you need figure out what the best font size and placement you need. Don’t let style create a confusing placement. I’ve seen phone numbers that were so small I could barely see them all because the picture they wanted on the card took up too much space.
