International Auto Shipping To Spain

I thought she was nuts. A friend of mine connected online with a guy in Spain and had decided to marry him and move there; all in the space of about two months. She had met him exactly twice; once when he came here for three days and once when she went there for a week.
Who does stuff like that?? But there was no talking her out of it. She was in love and she couldn't believe I didn't want to see her happy and blah, blah, blah.
Anyway, it was done. She was packing and her ticket was bought. She wanted to ship her car there and I couldn't believe it could be done easily. I had heard how tight things were, customs-wise, across the pond. But some calls to some international auto shipping firms changed my mind. Maybe this could be done; and maybe I could help her with it. Silly women need a helping hand now and then.
Spain is funny. I've never been there and was relieved to hear that they at least drive on the right side of the road. I had pictured her running around amid bulls to get from here to there. But man, what you have to do and be to take your car with you when you move. Establish residence, get the thing inspected, pay a boatload of taxes both here when departing and there when arriving.
I was amazed.
It got done, though, thanks to our rep at the international auto shipping company. If I hadn't had the woman's cell phone number I don't know what I would have done. Told my friend that everyone was walking these days, I guess.
The problems didn't really begin here in the States. We hired the international auto shipper, they listed the myriad forms and documents we had to have in order to send the car to begin with, and we provided. The problems started when she got there.
She wasn't a resident yet. Definition: she didn't own land and hadn't lived there for six months. So no car allowed to the foreign woman living in a nearby hotel for a while, they said. What, did she have to move in with the guy in order to keep the car that it had taken weeks and a small fortune to transport?
The answer was simple and she would have known that if she had stopped yelling long enough to listen to it. Get a lease for a year. Hey, presto! Then make sure you're at this Provincial Traffic Office, to get plates issued before you drive the car. No one said how she was supposed to get to the office without said car.
It all worked out in the end, though. She got to ride around in something like familiarity while she fussed with a map open on the passenger seat, fuming about old-world city planning.
I think I'd have stuck with the train.
