The Joy Of Childbirth

The Joy Of Childbirth

There have been many things seen and recorded through history that take your breath away, from the pulling down of the Berlin wall to the release of the concentration camp victims. However, there is nothing in life that will show you the miracle of life such as childbirth. It will fill you with wonder, it will make you cry and it will instil a feeling that you have never experienced before and will never forget.

For all but the hardest person, the memory of their child's birth is the one defining moment of their lives that will always be stated as THE moment. The experience is different for men and women, of course, but the impact is the same.

To feel a baby grow inside you, to feel it moving around, to get to know it before you see it, these are the things that bring about an emotion that means you would stand in the way of an army to protect that child of yours. There is nothing in heaven or hell that would allow you to see any misfortune happen to this new life. To know that you would give your life up for the little person inside you is the most powerful emotion on earth. To see your body change into nature's most instinctive habits is a wonder beyond belief.

For the father it is a little different but that feeling of protection that he feels for his partner while watching her grow and change shape, and to feel those little kicks inside her are all an awesome experience for him. Emotions that he never knew he was capable of will surface with an insurmountable force.

Some couples like to prepare themselves for the big event by watching childbirth videos. This is a good idea as it gives a much more realistic view of the whole event than a book. There will be plenty of people around willing to divulge their scare stories and tell you of all the blood, guts and pain simply because it makes for a dramatic story. But bear in mind that all these people go on to have another so it can't be that bad!

When it comes to the day of childbirth itself, it pays to be prepared. Make a list of all the things you will need and want to take into hospital with you and have them packed several weeks in advance. Remember things like magazines to read as you may be waiting around with no action for some time. It's also a good idea to take in some soothing music to listen to and while away the long hours.

Think about your preferences for pain relief but don't make them too rigid. Choices for this will be explained on childbirth videos and it is a good idea to be clued up about them before you go so that you don't have to make choices at difficult times.

It is very important to try and remain calm during the labour and birth. This will make it easier for you and your baby. You will feel more in control about what is happening to your body. There is no point in saying it's not going to hurt because it will but you have options. Pain relief is available in several different methods but when people tell you this is a totally different kind of pain to what you are used to, believe them.

You will be more concerned about getting your baby safely into the world than the amount of pain you are feeling. The pain is regular but you do get breaks to help you cope with it. One other thing to remember about the pain of childbirth is that it really does go as soon as that baby comes out!

The moment you are gazing at that tiny bundle of skin that has just been delivered onto your stomach, all pain will be forgotten and it will be replaced by that knowledge that you will take on the whole world in the protection of this new life. If they could bottle that feeling and give it to men, they would be positively dangerous!
