What To See In Seville

Seville, situated in the south of Spain is an historical, cultural and financial center of the province of Sevilla. The two thousand years of its history have seen many different groups of people settling in its surrounding area and they have all added to its vibrant and colorful development.

Seville's main tourist season is from August to September and during the times of the annual festivals. It is a treat to experience the city during these festivals. Seville hosts a week long somber religious festival, known as Semana Santa (Holy Week). During the festival, hooded penitents march along the crowd-packed streets followed by large floats. The week after the Semana Santa festival, Seville hosts an annual performance known as Feria de Abril (April Fair). It runs for a week, but in contrast to the Semana Santa it is lively and full of fun. You will find thousands of marquis, and be able to enjoy food, drinking and dancing at all times of day or night. You will be able to see men mounted on stunning horses and women wearing striking flamenco dresses.

If you enjoy flamenco, you can watch flamenco performances that occur during the day. Seville boasts a gastronomically pleasing cuisine that reflects its rich history and culture. Try one of the many tapas bars that can be found in the city. You can enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides around the cathedral that will take you through parks and past other attractions of interest. It is simple to book walking tours of the city, the cathedral or the alcazar palace. Bull fights occur at the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza. It is certainly an interesting experience for those who are not squeamish. Open air markets are set up in most parts of the city and they are pleasant to wander through. Be aware, however, that most vendors are closed on Sunday.

You can rent a bike in Maria Luisa Park or climb to the top of the Cerro de Carambolo. This hill is outside the city, although it is easily accessible and is worth the trip for the view of the city from the top. You can also choose to take a boat cruise along the River Guadalquivir.

There is a large variety of accommodation available in Seville. In fact, it boasts approximately 20,000 sleeping options. You can find luxury hotels down to simple guest houses. Many townhouses been converted into guest accommodation and these are often charming little hotels with Andalusian style architecture and pretty courtyards. Be aware that many of the cheaper hotels are undergoing renovations in order to upgrade into smarter hotels. This is inflating the prices of some of the previously inexpensive sleeping options and they are becoming harder to find.

Especially during the summer months, from August to September and during the annual festivals, in April, Seville is a popular tourist destination and as such its holiday accommodation books up quickly. Book your accommodation well in advance if you are coming during those times or you may find that you cannot get a room.
