Americas Love-Hate Relationship With Payday Loans By Rachel Yoshida
Lots of people in the United States and abroad have a love-hate relationship with payday loans and this relationship is very warranted, since there are a lot of pros and cons to getting one.
The industry has somewhat of a bad reputation and has been accused of predatory lending, but the fact is that the industry has been a lifesaver for a large number of families and has helped many people get through rough patches in their lives they otherwise would not have been able to get through. Some people who are eligible for a payday loan are not eligible for a bank loan, since banks check your credit score before they will give you anything.
Not everyone has the luxury of having a good credit score these days and is not able to obtain the funds they need to take care of an emergency with. Not everyone is blessed with having friends and family that have money to lend when things crop up that you have to deal with, like a flat tire on the only vehicle you have to get to work in, medicine for your child, or just groceries to last you until next Friday. If it were not for the payday loan industry, a lot of families would have their electricity turned off, cabinets empty, or a number of other bad things.
Getting a payday loan is a lot easier than getting a bank loan, since they do not run your credit. The only requirements most payday loan lenders have are that you be over 18 years old, have a checking account (that is in good standing), and a job. Some stores will require that you have been employed at the same location for 6 months, but it varies. Some will require a recent pay stub.
The worst thing about getting a payday loan is the interest rate. It will be much higher than what a bank would charge you for the same loan, but the tradeoff is that you get your money right when you need it (sometimes within the hour) and you do not have to have what is considered good credit to get it.
The last thing that you want to do is take out a payday loan for something that you do not absolutely have to have. Responsible uses for payday loans include paying the electricity bill, buying groceries, having a vehicle repaired, or just about anything that has to be done before your next payday.
Irresponsible uses are the purchase of anything having to do with entertainment or anything unnecessary to survive until your next payday. Please help the payday loan industry gain a good reputation by using the loans what they are meant to be used for.
These loans are slowly being outlawed in certain states within the US, but that spells trouble for a large number of people who are unable to get by sometimes without them. If you take out a payday loan, please use them for what they are intended.
