The Need To Take Care For Your Health By Francisco Segura
Health care increases are placing a financial burden on many American homes so the need for affordable health care has never been so great. Although there has been a rise over the last few years in providing this service to employees, a number of companies are using this as an excuse for a cost cutting exercise. I know this because I am one of those workers; I have a great job and prior to 2006, I also had an amazingly wonderful health care plan. My employer's excuse was it was getting to expensive with the current company and was going to switch to a less expensive one. They said it was necessary if all their employees were to have the same level of health care. I don't doubt that many people will say that I am still doing alright and shouldn't complain. The problem is that in an effort to find a less expensive insurance, having my husband and daughter on the policy is now costing twice the amount it did before. Lower cost cover may be available for all my colleagues now plus the company has saved money but if I want to keep my family on the plan, I will have to settle for a lower income. OK, so my health care is still respectable but the new company that we have is not as good as our previous. In my opinion, the company's search for affordable health care not only left all of us with a significant cut in our paychecks, but higher co-pays and more out-of-pockets expenses from us. You see, four years ago, I gave birth to a little girl and of course my old insurance paid for the whole of my hospital stay. I sat and worked out the cost of this new plan and if I were to stay in hospital now and have a baby it would cost around 4,000 dollars out of my own pocket. But, this doesn't include the additional amounts taken out of my paycheck, only the hospital costs. Luckily there are more and more affordable health care programs being created to help those that do not have any coverage. Options now exist for people that are not supplied with a health provision where they work, and now single mothers have access to plans which they can join; some people can even have free health care. The problem is when a small number of people take advantage of a system that was designed for those that needed it most.I feel sorry for those in genuine need of affordable health care who must look around and see others who are just sponges on the system: a financial burden to the state. Taxpayers, such as me, are contributing to the vast number of programs currently available. Ok, so some of the employees where I work have benefited but the real winner was my company. Having a reduced income seems to be the result of these work changes with only the company truly benefiting. Providing health care which is affordable for Americans needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later.
