Find Out What Motivates Employees: The Principles of Greatness

What is it that motivates an employee to do their very best? What are the keys to unlocking potential? A recent nationwide study has shown that more than half of the working population is not engaged in their work. People are less motivated, want less responsibility, have fewer skills and are widely diverse in age, background and lifestyle.

What motivates one employee may not motivate another. Understanding what motivates people to do their jobs is one of the most complex aspects of the relationship an employer has with their employee.

Employees are individuals. They have unique personalities, unique features and unique reasons for working. Some employees truly love what they do, others work for personal fulfillment. Some workers love the thrills associated with change, challenge, problems to tackle and deadlines to crush. Others enjoy the camaraderie and interaction with co-workers and clients.

Many employees are motivated by financial gain, opportunities for career growth and advancement, training and development prospects, flexible working conditions or additional paid time off. Others work to accomplish goals and feel as if they are contributing to something larger than themselves. Whatever their unique reason may be, employees must find some satisfaction in their work or they may become unhappy and unproductive.

Managers are faced with many challenges in building, growing, managing and engaging talented employees. There isn't a best-practices employee performance manual for understanding today's workforce. However, understanding what motivates employees and tailoring job requirements and benefits to individual employees can help put an organization and its decision-makers position to raise and maintain employee engagement levels.

Many companies use employee assessments that help them find ways to motivate employees and make them want to live up to their full potential. This provides better results as each employee's reason for working is unique. By using assessments, managers are able to find out what makes employees want to do their very best.

Even still, encouraging each individual employee to not just be the best, but to be the greatest they can be can be one of the most difficult tasks a manager can face.

The video, "Employee Motivation: Principles of Greatness," provides people with ideals that support the foundation upon which greatness is built. The principles of greatness - values, honesty, compassion, trustworthiness, kindness, honor, fairness, loyalty, respect, fortitude, wisdom and integrity - invoke the very thoughts and feelings that inspire people to do their best.

Employers can use this video to create a spark in the workplace that ignites drive and passion in their employees.
