Outdoor Furniture May be Most Rewarding

Outdoor Furniture May be Most Rewarding

Now that May is here, you probably have tons of outdoor projects and chores waiting for you. If you’re not looking forward to that, make sure that you also have some comfortable outdoor furniture waiting for you when you’re finished. For many people, yard work will take up a lot of time; especially for gardeners, whose busiest season is just beginning. The first part of the month is usually a good time to plant summer-blooming annuals, especially hardier varieties, such as petunias, pansies, and snapdragons. Although most areas of the country won’t see any more sub-freezing temperatures until the fall, be careful if you live in an area that’s prone to late-season frosts. When putting in tender plants, make sure that the soil is warm, moist, and workable. If there’s another frost, cover up your plants with burlap or newspaper. One more thing to look forward to is the re-emergence of your favorite perennials, which should be welcomed with a light coating of fertilizer. If you want to plant new perennials, wait until you’re sure that there is no more danger of frost. Now is also the time when people start dreaming about getting lush, emerald lawns. If that is your goal, you can make your grass exceptionally green by mowing it often, as this will force it to grow thicker and help it to crowd out weeds. Make sure that the blades on your mower are very sharp, so they’ll cut cleanly and evenly, as ragged ends make grass more vulnerable to disease. Don’t cut it too short, or it will need more water and herbicides, and become difficult to manage. Keep it 2 ½ - 3 inches high, and never cut off more than a third of its height at a time. This is called scalping, and it takes grass awhile to recover from it.Another advantage to leaving the grass a bit longer is that it will make the clippings shorter, so you won’t have to bag them. Let them fall where they may and stay where they fall, because they’ll act as fertilizer and inhibit the growth of weeds. Leaving it higher will also make the grass grow deeper roots, increasing its immunity to disease, and decreasing its need for water.Mow your lawn when it is dry, as wet grass will keep the blades from making the sharpest cuts possible. Mowing a saturated lawn can also compress the soil and squash the roots, causing areas of grass to die, and creating bare spots. Over-watering will keep the roots from growing deep enough; and shallow roots can become entangled with the grass and cause thatching. If you’re getting exhausted just thinking about all of the yard work awaiting you this summer, concentrate on the rewarding part, where you relax with a cold drink on a comfortable patio chair.
