Sexy Costumes - A Brief History By Robert E. Morrison
Clothing has taken many forms over the ages. It has evolved from something as simple as a cover for ones privates to something worn as a form of protection, on to a decorative measure to reflect one's personal tastes, and ultimately as something to attract and seduce the opposite sex.
Earlier on, the nature of a costume could be defined quite easily as - the skimpier an outfit, the sexier it was considered. However, as dressmaking became more of an art form over the centuries, other details also began to manifest themselves. The materials of dresses became a matter of great concern, with exotic ones like muslin, silk, lace etc. being revered by dressmakers and customers alike. Costumes with bare midriffs became staples for many dancers, and their glittery sequined dresses combined with intricate dance routines endeared them to many. Exotic jewelry also came to be considered as an integral part of these costumes.
Low-cut costumes became increasingly more popular over the years in the west. Starting sometime in the early medieval times, low-cut dresses began to emerge as a primary fashion statement. No nobles' court was considered complete without the women dressed in long flowing low-cut gowns and wearing jewelry with precious stones.
Dresses began to take more and more intricate forms as the decades passed, and the established fashion statements began to border on impracticality and discomfort for the sake of sexiness. The elaborately-made gowns of the Victorian era featuring lace are still held in high esteem for their great beauty and sensuality, but only a person who has had the dire misfortune to wear one knows how impractical and uncomfortable it is to wear it. For instance, the dress had to be worn with a pair of extremely tight corsets, one of which accentuated the waist, and the other the bosom. This made breathing very difficult for the wearers, and accounts are often found in history of noblewomen who had passed out during dances and other social events due to an inability to breathe, courtesy of over-tightened costumes. However, corsets continue to be favorites of costume fetishists because of their over-the-top sexy nature.
On another hand, swimsuits greatly evolved in the twentieth century, starting from unattractive loose-fitting full-body clothing to truly hot little outfits which adorned the body and emphasized the most attractive parts to their best. The middle of the twentieth century saw the introduction f the bikini in the United States, and they have continued to get smaller over the years. In the nineties, swimsuit designs went really wild and creative, something which made heads turn in admiration even more than before.
