The RIght Way To Respond To Setbacks

The RIght Way To Respond To Setbacks

You will benefit yourself by remembering this formula, E+R=O. E is our environment, the external world. R is our response and O is the outcome.

You know, many people believe that the external environment puts them at a certain state and create a certain outcome.

Let's take for example; if someone shouts at you, the outcome is that we feel bad. But, it is not the event that controls how we feel; it is how we choose to respond.

The thing is, different people respond differently. That is why different people feel different things and get different results as outcomes.

Isn't it true that two people can experience the same exact event? One person may get frustrated from it and angry, or the other person may even feel motivated from the same event.

Have you ever heard one person tell a joke? What happens? One person hearing it may laugh until he drops down, while another person hearing the same joke may feel totally offended. Thus, it is not what happens to us, but rather how we choose to respond internally that determines how we feel and what and what actions we choose to take.

If someone you have had a five year relationship with tells you she wants to end it because she does not love you anymore, how would you feel? Well, most people will say, "Of course that will make me feel angry, hurt, depressed and bitter. You know, that will cause me move around and fall in another relationship."

Well, again it really depends on how you choose to respond. If you tell yourself, "I am not good enough and that is why she left me!" Or "I would never find anyone to love again!" you will get into a lousy state.

At the same time, could you choose to respond differently? Of course you could. You know, you could tell yourself, "Great! Now that she has left me, I can finally find someone who is better. You know, I can finally have more fun again." And guess what? You would be in a more empowered state to move with your life.

So, it is not the environment that causes us to go into a certain states. It is how we choose to respond to the environment that determines what states we go into. You must understand that you create your own states. You are in charge. You choose how you want to respond to what happens.
