The Volkswagen Type 1 is one of the world's most recognized, popular economy vehicles. Although the German made car debuted in 1938, it wasn't until 1967 that marketing materials reflected its common nickname, the Beetle. This same year the drive train received notable upgrades, while the popular round, bubbly, insect like design remained in many ways the same. 1971 marked the year when the Super Beetle hit roads, and production of this vehicle continued through 1979, offering a version of the car with improved suspension, better brakes and increased passenger space.
Though the Beetle was successful during the 1960s, sales later declined due to Japanese automakers rear wheel drive technologies. Still, during the 70s the Beetle was the most popular car on the road, and in the 80s it was named car of the century. The VW Beetle remains a symbol of the free spirited, hippy generation during which its popularity peaked, and so its nickname Love Bug stuck and owners continue to maintain, restore and collect this little car.
With over 20 million Beetles made, it's no wonder that VW parts and vehicles are easy to come by.
