Answers to Common Questions about Model Aircraft

What materials are used in making model aircraft? Static aircraft that are not intended to fly are made of wood, metal, paper, canvas, plastic or a combination of these materials. Mahogany is the preferred wood. The finish is clear and striking. However, detailing is not possible in this type of models. Models of earlier aircraft were made of wood with nylon canvas pulled over the frame, to give it the authentic look. Plastic models are available of the latest aircraft with a high degree of detailing. Die-cast models are heavy with a fair amount of detailing and have some moving parts such as cockpit, landing gear, and windows.

How are the models displayed?

Some models can be hung from the ceiling. But most of the models are fixed on the base and also can be displayed on tabletops and desks. Larger models are displayed on the base. Rare and detailed models are displayed in a glass cabinet, protected from the elements.

Do you need to assemble the model before displaying?

Fragile parts such as guns, ammunition, and propellers may require assembling. However, assembling does not require much skill and anybody can assemble the model with glue.

What are undecorated models?

Undecorated models are made of wood and are hand crafted. They display only the basic shape of the airplane. High glosses finish and with only windows detailed in black paint give these models the classy look.

What are the different plane sizes?

Model airplanes come in various sizes, right from tiny plastic ones to larger models, which are almost 5 feet long. Some models are built to scale the most popular being the 1:72 and 1:48 for civil airlines. For military planes 1:32 and 1:24 are preferred.

Metal and plastic models have decorations that are glued, apart from paint. Wooden planes usually have detailing that is hand painted.

What should I do to maintain my model airplane?

Generally, model airplanes do not require any maintenance. Dusting off with a soft dry cloth is recommended. Always keep the models, where there is no chance of the model falling and breaking. Wax polish is good for wooden models.

Are model planes delicate?
