Getting Good Batteries For Your Model Plane

Model planes batteries are not the ordinary batteries; we buy from the shops for our ordinary gadgets or toys. The batteries for the model planes are stronger and last longer than the ordinary batteries. While buying a remote controlled plane, the manufacturers always indicate, which type of batteries one should use for the model planes and one should always stick to the batteries suggested.
Before buying batteries for your model plane, you should consider a number of factors. First, you should pickup one, which will last long. Some batteries can last for years, even with regular activations. You should also know on what speed your plane will fly and the amount of time it takes. There are some batteries, which come with chargers. If you buy batteries, which don't have a charger, it is important to ask the dealers, which accessories will suit well with your model plane. Chargers also differ. Some chargers take many hours to charge, while others take as little as 30 minutes to fully charge your batteries.
There are three main types of batteries, one can use for the model planes. These type are Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH), Nikel-cadmium (NiCAD), and Lithium Poly cells, which is the latest type to come into use. NiMH Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries are a class higher than NiCAD and are rechargeable. They can outperform NiCAD by up to 40% and are more environmental friendly. These batteries can also be said, to be charger friendly. Always ask the dealer, if your charger is compatible with these batteries, before buying it.
The Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable batteries come in two types, the ones that charge slowly and the others that charge fast. These batteries are quite reliable and durable. These batteries however need care, in order to maintain their performance. For example, they should not be overcharged by leaving them on for more that 30 hours and should not be charged before running out, since this may cause crystalline formation in the battery, which reduces battery life and performance, and is termed as 'memory effect'.
The Lithium poly cells come after years of research, to find longer life in battery. These batteries have the highest energy density in comparison to other commercial batteries. Though these batteries are more expensive, they have twice the power density than NiCAD and their self discharge rate is very low. However, NiMH batteries are compatible with most planes and are easier to maintain.
But even with the best batteries around, you need a good charger. The quality of chargers varies and it depends on how much money you are willing to spend to buy them. If you don't fly often, then you can get a less expensive charger that takes a longer time to charge. But, if you are a regular flyer, then get a more expensive charger that will take less time to charge, but offer longer flying time for your plane.
