It's Life Jim, But Not As We Know It By Catherine Harvey
They say the answer to many problems is right in front of you if you'd only stop looking so hard.
News reports are declaring an end to the problem of global warming. Scientists have discovered that sunglasses provide the clue to saving our planet from the ravages of our throw away lifestyles and lack of consideration for our delicate eco system. And it all lays in black plastic - the one thing eco warriors have been trying to get rid of.
Age related macular degeneration is an eye disease that is influenced over the years by the damage from sunlight. Sunglasses have been found to prevent this. The same materials that form sunglasses are now being used to create shields to protect us from the ravages of the sun.
It is a pre-requisite that all new build homes across the globe are to be constructed using sunglasses technology for the windows with the amazing black plastic to be imbedded within the building structure to prevent seepage of harmful rays.
And the same goes for new cars. Wind shields, of course, constructed from technology derived from sunglasses and the same technology infused into the final layer of lacquer. Manufacturers are currently working on a prototype car that is made entirely of sunglasses fabric, although it is expected to be some years from production. We may still warm the environment with our admissions but at least we won't have to suffer the consequences.
Gone are the days when celebrities will need to hide behind huge sunglasses, we'll all be behind them! But this is only the tip of the iceberg - so to speak. Suits are being made to protect the whole body from the sun's harmful rays. Gone is the need for sunglasses and gone is the need to keep up with her next door in the fashion stakes. We'll all be walking around in these, quite literally, cool suits.
Whole towns in Southern America where global warming is at its fiercest, are being trialled under black plastic domes to see how human skin and plant life fair. All necessary rays will seep through the barrier to sustain life as we know it but the harmful rays will be kept out.
Reports from the North show icebergs floating happily around the North sea, cocooned within black plastic bubbles and tests show that they have not decreased in size since this protection was put in place. Good news for those on the flood plains, then!
But the whole so-called solution begs many questions. Such as whether or not this is the responsible way to go. Should we not be preventing the whole breakdown of our eco-system instead of putting in place temporary fixes? Will society become ever more complacent about the damage we inflict on the environment if we are not seeing the immediate effects? Are we simply storing up more problems that future generations are unable to fix, thus just putting off the problem instead of dealing with it now?
Will this coping system actually do away with sunglasses manufacturers bringing swathes more people onto the unemployment statistics? Will we see laboratories and skin care manufacturers going under because there is no longer skin damage from the sun, bringing more unemployed scientists? Will the whole concept of global warming go away because this society is concerned only with the here and now?
These are just a few of the many questions the public would like to see the scientists answer before we give up our oompah loompah tans and huge designer sunglasses.
