Where Moisture Can Hide

Where Moisture Can Hide

When we are fortunate enough to have a basement in our living space, they should be a very versatile room when it is in good repair. There is not anything that prevents making the most of the area a basement can provide more than wetness. A basement's most common uses, which are for laundry equipment and storage, can be interfered with consistently because of a water dilemma.

The task of remodeling your basement into viable living space is not possible when you have a water or moisture problem. If you are experiencing vast water problems, then calling a specialist to have the problem solved is likely going to be the easiest answer. Some water problems can not be repaired well enough by an amateur home repair job. You should always get a few different estimates when you decide it is necessary to employ someone experienced for the job. They should always be licensed and have a respected reputation for their work.

Your home owner's insurance policy will probably cover fixing the problem. Policies vary and especially if water issues are concerned. If your basement water issue is not major, then you should be able to remedy it on your own.

If you have damp walls in the basement, a dehumidifier will help to improve the problem, but if you want to remodel the basement, you will need to take more substantial action. If there are visible moist spots, inside or outside, that you can clearly see, then that may be the cause of the dampness. This can be pretty easy to repair. Moisture or running water can get in when there is a damaged block or loose mortar in the cement cinder blocks.

To correct the issue you will need to open the damaged section up by taking out any loose mortar and brushing the damaged place free of debris. You can do this using a chisel and hammer, along with a steel or hard bristled brush. Soak the section to be fixed with a spray bottle filled with water.

You need to use a hydraulic cement to fill in the damaged place. Make sure to follow the mixing directions precisely. The mixture needs to have just the right consistency to form a fairly firm ball. Start inserting the mixture into the open area until you get it completely filled. Use a trowel to scrape off any remaining mortar before the cement begins to harden. When it is totally hardened, use the brush to buff the surface off.

If a crack anywhere on the blocks or mortar does not appear to be your problem, the dampness and water flow could be caused by your gutters or the landscaping close to the residence foundation. Adding an extension to the bottom of a gutter is good to keep the water away from the foundation. If this does not work either, now is the time when you need that expert to clearly identify the problem.
