Some Appliances Use Water Too By Jim Corkern
All of our household appliances that we use are so necessary that we are just dumbstruck when one stops working. What in the world do we do without an air conditioner when it is hot outside? What a loss if a freezer or refrigerator quits working unexpectedly. All these appliance problems are upsetting to say the least, especially if the warranty has already run out.
Appliances that stop working is enough to deal with, but when appliances that use water causes a flood it is more frustrating. Appliances may not have quit working, but when one that works with water abruptly has a connection to come loose or burst it could be a terrible mess. The most effective way to avoid this particular situation is to keep a check on their connections.
There are a number of appliances that have a water line that makes them function. Dishwashers, washing machines, garbage disposals, refrigerators, and hot water tanks are all appliances that use water. All of these items will have to be on an examination list of the things in the residence where water enters and exits. This examination list is an important matter. Every time water is not where it is supposed to be your house it can cause problems. The damage can be a lot and costly if you might have been away from home a few days.
Be sure all the hoses to appliances are attached the right way. If they have rubber seals or washers, examine them for rotting ever so often and any rubber hoses as well. When the weather area where you live is prone to a lot of frigid weather in the winter season, you can shut the water to them off entirely on really frigid nights if you think a particular appliance could be affected, such as a washing machine in a basement. Insulating pipes is necessary to prevent lines under a house from freezing that come into all water using appliances.
Hot water tanks should be set in a plastic pan made specifically for them. Having a drain positioned close by is a wise idea too. Other than the hose connections having problems, even the tanks of aging hot water heaters frequently will get rusted holes in them and develop progressively worse leaking.
Washing machines and dishwashers are the most common for flooding in the living space. They are used everyday and often break down and need inspecting the most. In a busy household, if either of these appliances are out of order or cause a flood, it is more than just an inconvenience, it will keep you from cleaning up daily laundry and dishes and can develop a larger mess by water as well.
