Myths About Online PowerPoint Training Courses By Rich Talbot
Corporate training has many options that weren't available a few years ago leaving many training coordinators confused about what is the best option for PowerPoint courses. One growing trend is online training. These courses have a lot of advantages over traditional instructor-led programs... or do they?
Let's explode a few of the myths about online PowerPoint training courses.
Myth #1: Employees can learn anytime and anywhere
Do you really want an employee taking an online course at home while watching television? Even if the course is accessed at work, it's too easy for a student to chat with co-workers or try to multitask with their other duties, thus not getting the full benefit of teaching. Employees who do not make time for traditional courses are not likely to find the time to give online courses their full attention either.
An employee's cubicle - or living room chair - isn't the environment most conducive to quality learning. A conference room or training centre puts the student into learning mode and increase the chance of retention.
Myth #2: Employees learn at their own pace
When individuals are given all of the information at once, they tend to skim over sections they think they know, missing critical details. Without the guidance of an instructor, a student may waste time poring over a single concept, never quite getting it and wasting a lot of time.
Myth #3: No special software required
Online PowerPoint training courses often lack one critical thing: PowerPoint! Without hands-on experience implementing the new concepts, the information is easily lost. An instructor-led course allows students to use the software and immediately apply their new knowledge.
Myth #4: Online training is cheaper
When it comes to training, cheaper is not necessarily better. What matters is the quality of education. An online course might cost less but provide less depth to the subject than a traditional course would.
Another cost savings with online training is the lack of travel. However, many training organizations will send their instructors to you. Setting up training at your business or a nearby third-party training venue offers the travel savings as well as the benefits of traditional coursework.
Myth #5: Online courses designed by experts provide the best education
Online PowerPoint training courses offer a one-size-fits-all solution. An instructor-led course can be customized to fit your business's unique needs. Students can bring real projects from work and ask the instructor specific questions that are directly relevant to their work experience.
Online courses certainly have their place as part of a comprehensive training program, but nothing takes the place of face-to-face interaction with experienced and certified instructors. Look for training providers who will accommodate your organization's needs, creating a customized curriculum and offered in state-of-the art training facilities or the alternate venue of your choice.
