Making Your Child's Birthday Party a Success

Children are wonders to behold... until you try to throw them a birthday party. No matter how sweet and happy they seem, as soon as you begin to plan for a cake and ice cream, it seems like your troubles are just beginning. Even if you're planning a party for a one year old, you need to be armed with good advice that can make sure you're not running around in circles after other people's kids or that you're not cleaning up more than you are celebrating this special day with your child.

Make Someone Else Do It

If you have the money, this is a chore you want to leave to someone else. In all honesty, birthday parties are times for celebrating, but if you're doing all the work, when are you going to get to celebrate? This is why they make party planners. Or you could ask a sibling to do the work for you -- and then let them know they're off the hook for a present. You might also want to divide up the tasks among friends so you have a built in support system as well as people to complain to when plans go south.

Simplicity is the Key

What you need to keep in mind is that children don't really notice the details the way adults do. If you're worried about what the other parents are going to think, you're going to stress yourself out more than is necessary. Here are some things that you don't need to worry about:

- Kids don't care if the decorations are expensive or even matching -- Yes, you can go to the dollar store and get cheap-o decorations. You're just going to throw them out anyway. Sure, the latest Disney figure would be great, but it really doesn't matter.
- Show a movie instead of a clown -- You don't need to go all out to make your child's party the most exciting event of their lives. Chances are good that they will have plenty of more opportunities for that. Instead, show an age-related movie that will keep the birthday girl/boy and her/his friends occupied and out of trouble.
- Make the cake yourself -- Just get a box of cake mix, a full size sheet pan, and some icing and make the cake yourself. You might even want to let your older children or spouse help you decorate it to make it all the more special. - Just because it didn't come from a bakery doesn't mean it won't be appreciated (and eaten).
- Invite no more children than their age -- This will help you control the party as well as your sanity. Anyone that's under 5 isn't going to remember who was at their party anyways, so why make it a huge affair?

Your child does deserve to be celebrated on their big day, but why make it hard on yourself at the same time?
