The 2-Stroke Model Airplane Engine

Flying is a passionate hobby pursued by many people. It is one way to unwind and relax. You can have 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines for your model airplane. A 2-stroke engine is much lower in power and output, but has a specialty of its own. It is made up of glow or nitro fuel, which contains alcohol. And the castor oil is used for lubrication. 2-stroke means that fuel is ignited on every second stroke of the piston in the cylinder. As the cycle increases, the power output increases. As it is simple, it can operate to high power outputs, but in turn can make quite a noise.

Always remember that a brand new engine needs to be handled delicately in the initial stages, before it can really perform to the best of its ability. You can just take it outdoors, as is the case with some people, who do it. And they get started by giving it its first run in the air. But, be smart and try doing this at home first. It is a much safer option. Take short runs, lubricate the parts well and this is how you break it gently. The parts start moving in smooth motion, one with another. You have to break the engine, so that it does not get overheated the first time and damage vital parts of the plane.

Also put in a new glow plug and fill it up with 2-stroke fuel. You need to open the valve, to let the fuel flow. Then attach the glow plug battery. With the help of an electric starter, let the engine run at a low speed. Stop and start. Repeat this a couple of times, and soon your engine will run smoothly always. Engines like these are in demand, as they are cheaper and require lower maintenance. That is why, if you break it well, it lasts a long time. They come in the range of .012 cubic inches up to 3 cm. And from 40cc to 60cc.

This engine is made up of an aluminum piston, and a brass sleeve. It is chrome plated and has a non-ringed engine. It is a one piece engine. It basically operates in one revolution. Always check out the glow plug coil, as it shows you, how well the engine is running. It will be shiny with a lighter shade of gray, and will not be out of shape, even after a long run. If it is grayer, it means bad news. Immediately richen your fuel and retune the engine of your airplane. When the engine is cool, wash the glow plug with some fuel, which in turn cleans the dirt and prevents it from falling in the engine.
