Can't Use The Basement If It's Wet

A basement is definitely a very good space to possess in a living space. It gives you ample space for hiding away things that are not used all the time, but things that you could not live without either. They can also give extra living area when home owners take the time and money it requires to finish them out. They make a much needed room for storage and usually have enough left for a guest room, family room, or play room as well.

There can be a problem if you decide to use a basement for more living space and that is if it produces a lot of water. Water and flooding may convert a basement into more of a pain in the neck than a convenient addition when wetness conditions are involved. There are some remedies to be had, at least temporarily, when you are hiding things in an unstable basement until the cause of the problem can be really fixed.

When you put things in your basement, you should not put them on the floor. When you have a basement floor that gets soaked when it rains very much, things on the floor are going to get wet. Paper boxes are not the best choice as storage options after they have gotten wet and things in them will probably get ruined. Acquiring plastic containers for putting things in is a much smarter idea. It will keep items from water and using plastic covers aids in keeping out dampness and insects as well.

Put up shelving in a basement if it is easily flooded. Shelving should keep stuff like the plastic containers or anything else from coming into contact with water. Even if a basement is usually dry, having things on shelves is always smart if a water pipe bursts water problems could occur from this also. Attaching hooks on the basement walls and hanging bars are useful to keep stuff off the floor also.

When a basement is subject to very much moisture, you might paint the cinder block walls by purchasing a product designed for this. You can acquire paint products with a sealant in it that is made to help with moist walls.

It is not a good idea to put necessary papers or heirlooms like photos in a damp basement. It will likely allow mildew and mold and these types of things can be permanently ruined.

Keeping all water pipes in your basement in good shape might help to stop any unexpected leakage. When your basement floods or is moist from water seeping in from outdoors, you will probably need a professional to identify the problem and recommend the wisest process to repair it.
