My Refrigerater Leaked and I Wasn't Home

There are a number of the major appliances that we make use of almost everyday and are such a part of our lives that we are just at a loss if one goes out. What in the world do we do without an air conditioner in the hot seasons? We can lose a lot of money invested in food if a refrigerator or freezer stops working unexpectedly. Any kind of appliance issues are distressing anytime, especially if the warranty is no longer valid.

Appliance failure is bad enough, but when appliances that use water flood it is much worse. Sometimes the appliance has not quit working, but when one that works using water has a connection to burst or come loose, it could be an awesome problem. The best and easiest way to stop this particular disaster is to make sure the connections are maintained properly.

You probably have several appliances that have a water line that makes them function. A dishwasher, hot water heater, refrigerator, garbage disposal, and a washing machine are all appliances that need water. Every one of these appliances should be on an inspection list of the places in your residence where water comes in or goes out. This inspection list is a serious part of home maintenance. Every time water is not where it is supposed to be in a residence, it can wreak havoc. The damage can be big and expensive if you happen to be away from home for a few days.

Make sure all appliance hoses are attached correctly. If they have rubber seals or washers, examine them for break down occasionally and your rubber hoses also. If the place you live in is prone to bitterly freezing weather in the winter time, you may shut the water to them off all together on extremely cold nights if you think a specific appliance might be affected, such as a washing machine in the basement. Pipe insulation is necessary to prevent pipes under a living space from freezing that connect into all water using appliances.

Hot water tanks should be set in a plastic pan made just for them. Having a drain located nearby is a wise idea also. Other than the hoses and their connections developing problems, the tanks themselves of aging hot water heaters often will get rusted places in them and develop a considerable amount of leaking.

Washing machines and dishwashers are the biggest danger for flooding in the home. They are used very regularly and usually tear up and need inspecting the most. In a busy household, if either of these appliances are not working or create a flood, it is more than an annoyance because it will keep you from cleaning up daily laundry and dishes and could develop a new mess by water also.
