4 Tips That Can Protect Your Computer From Online Threats

Computer security has become one of the top issues online today. Whether or not we take the threat seriously can mean all the difference between online security and disaster. Today's victims range from the Internet inexperienced to the Internet Illiterate to those who consider themselves experienced. The main point here is that nearly anyone can be a victim.

To make your surfing fun and safe, here are a few tips:

Purchase a good firewall software. There are a number of top rate softwares out there that can provide you with a range of security features for your protection. Among them, phishing filters, e-mail filters, blocker hacker access, to your computer, and virus and spyware protection.

These softwares usually auto update themselves after installation, but it is always a good idea to manually verify that you have the latest version every once in awhile. One important point to keep in mind is, that if it (the security software) does not update then you could already have a problem. Deal with this issue immediately should it arise.

Keep your operating system up to date. This will help as security issues will come up from time to time. These issues could be minor or critical to the OS security. In either case they are issues that can be exploited by hackers. Remember to set your operating system, browsers, etc. to auto update. This is crucial to your protection!

Invest in a router and plug it into your existing dsl lines. Routers have the single advantage of being able to connect multiple computers together to a single isp account without the user having to pay fees for each computer on his network. The routers that have a firewall equipped into them (which most of them do) have the added feature of preventing hackers from actively scanning your computer's ports for any potential access. What this means is that it gives your computer an added measure of protection from phishing attempts.

Handle E-mail with care. Many e-mail phishing scams have gotten very sophisticated. It can be very difficult to detect the real from the the phony. One important tip here is this: don't click on the link provided in the e-mail. Always be on the safe side.

If you are a member of the site, open a new window and go directly to the site itself. The reason is simple, many of these phishing e-mails use html. They look like the real thing, but more often than not, they will lead to bogus sites also designed to look like the real thing. These sites are geared towards stealing your personal and financial information. Beware!

Your computer security is ultimately your responsibility. Taking the steps above can go along way to ensure that you have a safer experience online.
