Proper Ways To Store Things In A Basement

There is one thing that a basement in a home is used for more than anything else and that is storage. Many of us are diehard pack rats and we love having a basement where we can put all those things that we may not use very often or even at all, but things we are loathe to part with. We might also keep some necessary things down there too like holiday decorations.

When you store articles in your basement, never keep them on the floor. When you have a basement floor that gets soaked if it rains any amount, things on the floor can get wet. Card board boxes are probably a bad choice as storage containers. After they have gotten wet, whatever is in them may become soggy. Acquiring plastic containers for keeping things in is a much wiser idea. It certainly will keep stuff from water and when you use plastic lids, it helps keep out moisture and insects as well.

Use a shelving system in a basement if it has a history of flooding. The shelves should protect things like the plastic containers or whatever else from getting wet with water. Even when a basement is continually dry, using shelves is always a smart precaution in case a water line becomes damaged because flooding can occur from this too. Installing hooks and hanging bars along the basement walls are good ideas to keep things off of the floor as well.

When the basement is subject to too much moisture, try painting the cement walls by purchasing a paint material uniquely for basement walls. You can purchase paint products with a sealant in them that is designed to help with moist walls. It is never a wise idea to keep valuable papers or family heirlooms like photo albums in a damp basement. It can promote mold or mildew and these items may be ruined.

It is important that whatever water pipes are in your basement stays in good shape in do not leak. This will help to side track any unexpected water damage. When a basement floods or is moisture ridden because of water seeping in from outdoors, you should seek a professional to investigate the dilemma and tell you the easiest way to take care of it. Most of the time there are simple solutions that you would never think of to solve the problem. Make sure you consult with the experts.
