Google Sets Sights on RFID By J.D. Carr
Insider news has been released about a future program that Google is currently working on. The company is currently developing a program that will make literally everything in the world accessible at the click of a button. You will be able tag every book, movie, television, music, and radio broadcast. There will be even the power to tag official documents and photographs. The scary news is that the network may even have the power to tag actual people and their personal belongings as well. My interest caused me to look further into this announcement and learn a bit more about it. Read on to find out a little more about this latest announcement.
The news come via an interview Daily Mail recently did with the Google VP of engineering Douglas Merrill. It was during the interview that Merrill released the company's future plans. Insiders currently do not know what type of technology or software that is currently being created by the company. Google has a record of keeping many of their project very secret from everyone else. What we do know is that everything will be controlled at all times using RFID. This is called radio frequency identification. It will be interesting to see how everything will actually work.
Taking a basic look at the idea, it sounds pretty cool. The technology will enable us to tag everything from our dog, to a book, to our cellphone, to your car keys. What this could mean is the ability to find things that we lose which happen to be tagged. Hypothetically, let me say that I lost my car keys somewhere in the house and can not find them. I would be able to use the Google software to access my information and find the keys I mistakingly placed downstairs. You can now see why the announcement that Google plans to do this is not as scary as it sounds. It actually offers up a lot of potential for all of us.
Now, for those who are worried about the software, you have somewhat of a reason to be. Merrill even stated that it is a very real possibility that an individual or corporation could find a way to manipulate Google's search system. They could manipulate the system to their advantage, thus giving them access to all of your tagged information. I personally believe that this is one of the reasons that the company has yet to release the program to the world. They might be working on several ways to help prevent this from happening. Otherwise, if the program is released and people do indeed do that, we could be heading down a very dangerous path. Keep posted here for future updates.
