Creating Genealogy Charts

By Jim Brown

Creating Genealogy Charts

The responsibility for creating genealogy charts is usually assigned to the eldest in a family. That person may not know their family history but will probably be given scraps of paper in a bag or a shoebox that contain the names of various family members. Some of these scraps might be written on napkins during a wake or they might come from conversations with family members over dinner.

Some people have problems with creating genealogy charts because they do not know how far back in their history they are expected to go. They might think that their immediate family should suffice, and creating genealogy charts for them would be a simple task that might take only an hour at most to finish. Some families have taken on this responsibility as a hobby and spend a great deal of time on the project.

Other people get a great deal of satisfaction from doing research about their family. They might hope to find some unknown family member and when they do find someone that is a member of the family but has not been discussed with anyone else in the family, the person in charge of creating genealogy charts will suddenly feel very comfortable about the task that is before them.

Most families will have a great deal of fun pursuing their family history. They want to know all of the information about their family tree. There is great honor and pride derived from finding out which side of the family has a war hero hidden in the crowd and which person or branch of the family had the most children. Some people are surprised to find that someone else in the family has the same name as their own.

The task of creating genealogy charts might require several trips to graveyards to find family members. These graveyard visits are a trip down memory lane for many people and some people actually enjoy visiting people that they never knew but feel a close connection with anyway. There are several things that can be accomplished while they are at the grave. They can take the time to note the dates on the tombstone and any irregularities in spelling that differ from any of the records that they may have on the family.

Some family genealogy studies will require trips to the courthouse. By gathering dates of marriage, divorce and death, they can feel relieved to know that they have the right information in the genealogy charts that they are making. Creating genealogy charts that are accurate and precise in all details is one of the most important factors of having the charts completed by members of the family and not by a company who knows nothing about the family history.
