If you’re thinking about a career in engineering, you should consider the field of agricultural engineering. Although you may thinking that farming and agricultural needs have decreased over the last few decades, agricultural engineers help provide machines and technology that helps to feed millions of people each day. The science and technology of agriculture continues to rise, necessitating engineering assistance for many different projects.
Agricultural engineers research, design, and develop technology and science for agricultural production and processing. Engineers may also help manage natural resources like water. The field has existed for over 100 years and it continues to make a big impact
As an agricultural engineer, you might design agricultural machinery, plan irrigation systems, and do environmental impact assessments among other possible tasks. Individuals may specialize in particular areas of agriculture like machinery or bioprocessing. In addition, agricultural engineers may conduct research to help conserve soil and other natural resources or to improve food processing in various ways.
If you stop to think about it, agricultural engineering is very important in today’s world. Most people rely on others to grow and process their food. Agricultural engineers help ensure that land can be properly irrigated, that machines will harvest the crop in the most efficient way possible, and that the food will be processed quickly and easily. This all helps put food on our tables and decreases the amount of work and cost that goes into producing it.
You’ll find that many different universities offer programs in agricultural engineering. Over 50 different universities in the United States have a department and many have their own research agendas and individual requirements. Most are located in state universities. Professors and students may belong to one of the major agricultural engineering associations, which keep them in contact with one another to share research and innovations.
Generally, you’ll receive general engineering training in the first few years with increasing specialization as you near your graduation date. You may be able to participate in the university’s agricultural research to learn hands on engineering techniques and technology. You’ll learn about cutting edge agricultural science.
Some programs may combine other focuses with the engineering focus, giving the student a more diverse education. You may want to combine an agricultural engineering degree with an agricultural systems management education, for example. With such an education, you would be ready for technical sales or to work as a technical manager for an agricultural related business. This is great if you are more interested in management or sales as opposed to the science and technology aspect of engineering.
